AI Reads Mammograms Better Than Radiologists

Mammography is performed to detect signs of breast cancer. In European countries, with the help of AI technology and X-ray Data Analysis, the images can be read more effectively than radiologists.

Researchers from universities, Google Health and healthcare centres in the UK and the US developed a computer model for reading breast X-ray images. An algorithm was structured and the model was taught through X-ray images from close to 29,000 women that had symptoms of cancer.

The outcome: The AI system managed to read the images more efficiently than radiologists. It also reduced the number of misread reports. The outcomes of the research were published in the journal named Nature. The false negatives and false positives were reduced by 9.4 per cent and 5.7 per cent respectively on scans performed in the US and 2.7 per cent and 1.2 per cent in the UK.

The American Cancer Society states that close to 20 per cent of breast cancer cases is missed due to mammography. This means, 1 out of 5 cases are missed because of false negatives. AI system helps to detect breast cancer more accurately. The advantage is AI system can work all day and night when compared to radiologists.

In many cases, there may be no signs or symptoms but it can be detected through screening mammography. Like any other test, mammography also has certain limitations and due to which some cancers may be missed. But, with the help of an AI Machine Learning in countries like France, this limitation can be overcome and cancer can be detected at an early stage to prevent lives.
